Courageous Advocates

Courageous advocates-Let’s be the change!

Mahatma Gandhi

What is a courageous advocate?

At Pilsley School we:

  • Seek wisdom and creativity to become more sustainable
  • Inspire hope when we stand up for what we believe in
  • Support our local community
  • Find endurance to not give up in the face of challenge

A courageous advocate is someone who supports, champions and speaks up for a cause that is important and meaningful to them. Courage is needed to persevere and stand up for something or someone you believe in to make a difference in the world.

At Pilsley CofE Primary School we want to support and encourage our children to become courageous advocates through championing causes in their local community, nationally and globally.

At some point in life, we will all face challenges and need support to help us overcome these barriers. We teach our children that it is important to help others through our work on British Values, World Views and by links to the Bible and other important books from other faiths. Our children learn about other courageous advocates who make a difference to our world. We want our children to have confidence to discuss and debate big ideas, to challenge injustice and engage in activities that can bring about change on some level.

"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."

                                                                                        (Proverbs 31: 8-9)

What do our courage advocates do?

It is important for our children to appreciate their role as part of a community. We encourage them to take responsibility for themselves and foster an understanding of their importance, impact and influence they have in the world.

Our Eco team are an example of how our children have opportunities to implement change and make a real difference to the world around them.

Our pupils are also involved in:

✓Anti-Bullying Week

✓Food collection at Harvest

✓Welcoming visitors such as our local MP

✓ Recycling and litter picks

✓Comic Relief

✓Children in Need

Mental Health Awareness week

✓ Raising funds for Blind Veterans UK

  ✓ Learning about Fair Trade

✓ National days of commemoration such as Poppy Appeal

✓ Singing in the local community

✓ Learning about different topics linked to this area across the curriculum

✓ Their own personal advocacy such as saving their own pocket money

Courageous Advocacy and Worship

As part of our Collective Worship each week we take time to look at what is in the news. We use this time to understand the news, discuss how it makes us feel and how this impacts us, our local area and the wider world. We use our reflection skills to ask and answer questions then link these stories to the relevant British Values and Global Goals. This often leads to discussions about how we can help shape changes in our future.

Exploring Courageous Advocates

Our children have been learning about courageous advocates across the globe, both past and present who have faced injustice and overcome barriers in order to help others for the greater good.
