Movers and Shakers (History)

Movers and Shakers ( a history-based topic)

This project teaches children about historically significant people who have had a major impact on the world. They will learn to use timelines, stories and historical sources to find out about the people featured and use historical models to explore their significance. The Key Stage One Children will explore this history topic and the EYFS children will follow mixed aged planning that links in with the same themes. Please see below for further information about the EYFS mixed age topic content.

In the Movers and Shakers project, your Key Stage One child will learn five statements from Dawson's model that will help them identify people who are historically significant and use the words year, decade and century to describe dates and times. They will study the life and impact of a significant person in the locality and of 10 significant individuals from around the world. They will complete in-depth studies of significant explorers Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong, and significant activists Emmeline Pankhurst and Rosa Parks and think carefully about the impact of their actions. The children will also carry out an independent study of a significant person from the past and learn about people who are significant today. They will also learn how significant people are commemorated.

Topic Home Learning: Please see the documents below for ideas about how you can support your child with this topic at home. There are homework activities, a home learning workbook and suggestions for wider reading and websites to explore. There is also a knowledge organiser so you can see what key learning is covered during this topic.

EYFS children will follow mixed-age planning which links to the topic of Movers and Shakers.

This term, EYFS children will be learning about significant people who have explored, discovered and changed the world, as well as the people who help us in our everyday lives. They will learn about famous explorers such as Amelia Earhart, Charles Darwin and Neil Armstrong, and discover how their journeys helped us understand more about our world and beyond. The children will take part in their own explorations by investigating the school grounds, observing plants and animals, taking photographs and recording their findings. They will also learn about how transport has changed over time and how these developments helped people travel further and explore new places. As part of their learning about people who make a difference, the children will be introduced to inspiring figures such as Sir David Attenborough, Rosa Parks and Floella Benjamin, exploring how they helped others and influenced positive change. Throughout the term, children will reflect on their own families, friendships and communities, developing an understanding of the different groups they belong to and how they can be kind, helpful and responsible members of their class, school and wider community. Through stories, discussions, creative activities and outdoor learning experiences, children will develop their curiosity about the world and an appreciation of the people who have helped shape it.
