Reading

Reading is a foundational skill that is crucial for children's learning and development, opening doors to knowledge and opportunity. It's essential for all areas of learning and requires consistent practice. Reading empowers children, builds empathy, and lays the groundwork for lifelong success. We aim to help parents actively participate in their child's reading development at home to cultivate strong literacy skills. This involves creating a supportive and engaging environment for reading, fostering a love of books, and providing regular opportunities for reading practice and discussion.

At Pilsley CofE Primary School, we use the Read Write Inc. Phonics programme to teach our children how to read (Early Years to Key Stage One).

Read Write Inc.

Read Write Inc., developed by Ruth Miskin, provides a structured and systematic approach to teaching literacy. It is used by more than a quarter of the UK's primary schools and is designed to create fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers.

Each Read Write Inc. programme meets the higher expectations of the National Curriculum and uses effective assessment to accelerate every child's progress and prepare them for the National Curriculum Tests.

Reading Progression

We begin by teaching the children to say and recognise the letters that represent the most common sounds and teach them how to ‘blend’ these sounds together to make words.

When children begin the Read, Write Inc. programme in Reception they will bring home a set one sound book to help them practice saying the sounds they have been introduced to.

Once children have learnt some set one sounds they will begin to blend sounds together to read simple words. At this stage we will send them blending books so they can practice this skill at home to build fluency with word reading.

They will then progress to reading red 'ditty' books which contain simple sentences.

As they continue to progress and learn more letter sound combinations, they will move through the colour bands illustrated below. Once they are familiar with the sounds in set one they will progress to learning set two and three sounds.

When children have progressed through all the colour stages of the Read, Write Inc. scheme we will guide them in their selection of appropriate reading books from our 'free reading' library.

Alongside their Read Write Inc. learning we are committed to providing the children with a rich reading environment in school and at home by giving the children regular opportunities to borrow books from the school library to take home alongside their reading book. In school, alongside their read write inc. reading programme children listen to high quality stories read aloud every day and explore rich texts more deeply through their topic and outdoor learning activities. Each afternoon the children are given the opportunity to share books with adults or peers or engage in quiet reading in class.
