Newsletter 1- Sept 22

Dear Parents and Carers,

Queen Elizabeth II

We were all deeply saddened to receive the news that Her Majesty the Queen died yesterday. This morning, we have had a special collective worship in school, celebrating her life and recognising what a very special lady she was. Above all, she was a person of faith and of prayer who lived out her life with a heart of service, guided by the teachings of Jesus. May she rest in peace and rise in glory. And as we now say with prayerfulness, God save the King.

We would like to share the following prayer with you in remembrance of Her Majesty:

“Father God, we thank you for the life of your servant, our late Queen, Elizabeth. Thank you for the example of dedication, faith and service that she set throughout her life, both as our monarch and as a mother, grandmother and great grandmother. We pray particularly for all her family at this sad time. Comfort them in their loss, strengthen them in their time of need and fill them with joyful memories of times past. We pray particularly for Charles as he takes on the role of King. Give him wisdom and humility and help him serve our country as his mother did. Comfort us also as a grateful nation. Help us to serve others dutifully, following Queen Elizabeth’s example, so that we might learn to live together in love and respect. We ask this in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Back to school

It has been wonderful to see everybody back at school on Monday and I hope you have all enjoyed a restful summer break. The children have settled back in brilliantly to their new classes and as we begin our new term, we extend a very warm welcome to our new Reception families as well as the Bixler family who have joined us from the United States. Do say 'hello' if you see them on the playground ðŸ™‚

New school business officer

Just before the summer holidays, the governors appointed a new school business officer. We're delighted to have Miss Catherine Green join us who will be working in the office on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.  Mrs Macdonald, who has been working in the office on a relief basis, will be training Miss Green over the next few weeks. Mrs Read will be working in the office on a Monday and a Tuesday.

School garden

Since returning to school this week, you may have noticed that the school garden is getting really established and all the hard work by our gardening club, ECO captains and Mrs Allinson is really paying off. We have grown herbs, strawberries, courgettes, beans, blueberries, potatoes, dahlias, pumpkins as well as six varieties of tomatoes! The children have learnt about companion planting and have planted marigolds and nasturtiums alongside the tomatoes to keep the pests away! If anyone would like to offer to help with weeding or if you would like to make any donations of plants for the garden, please speak to Mrs Allinson or contact the office.

Individual school photographs

The school photographer will be in school on Monday 12th September to take individual photographs of the children, which you will then be able to purchase via Tempest photography. Your child will come home with the details of how to place an order next week. All children need to come to school wearing their school uniform. The junior children will need to bring their PE kits to school with them in a named bag on Monday, to change into ready for their PE lesson in the afternoon. If you would like any photographs with younger siblings who aren't in school, please come into the hall at drop off time on Monday morning.

Y3 and Y4 Wider Opportunities music programme

Next week, the children in Y3 and Y4 will be introduced to their Wider Opportunities music teacher who will be leading a class-based music lesson for fifteen weeks on a Thursday afternoon, teaching the children how to play the violin. There is no cost to parents for this as it is paid for by school and has historically been subsidised by the PTA. It will be a few weeks before instruments are sent home as the first few lessons are built around musicianship and taking care of the instrument. There will be some paperwork arriving soon which parents will need to sign and return to the office.

A note from the office:

A form was sent home last term headed 'Application for Pupil Premium Funding' which we ask parents to complete to see if school is entitled to claim any additional funding (Pupil Premium) for your child.  This also serves as a check to see if your child may be entitled to free school meals once they enter Y3. All infant children in Reception-Y2 are entitled to a free school meal.

It need only be completed once in your child's time at school, as data is automatically checked by Derbyshire County council regularly.  If we did not receive a completed form back from you last term, you will be sent another copy and we would be grateful if you could complete and return this to school. Thank you.
